“Fidgeting allowed, dreaming welcome” is a farm-based group programme for children aged 6 to 8 with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is especially meant for children who find it hard to engage with conventional therapy settings, for example in a doctor’s practice.
Resource-oriented social skills training
The focus is on your child’s strengths, abilities and potential – not primarily on their difficulties. Starting from this appreciative attitude, the children develop social skills and carry them over into their everyday lives. This strengthens how they get along with others, how they communicate and their sense of self-efficacy.
We use a range of methods:
- Resource tree: strengths become visible as leaves and fruit, support as roots.
- Self-reflection questions: questions about joy, hopes, strengths and good relationships – for example “What has gone well for you today?”
- Role-play and trust exercises: practical exercises that encourage empathy and trust.
- Peer support: group exercises in which the children learn from each other and strengthen one another.
Why on a farm?
The farm is an ideal place to learn: the children learn in surroundings where they feel comfortable. Fresh air and plenty of movement make a change from the therapy routine many of them know. This creates a pleasant learning situation in which what they learn can be consolidated and carried over into everyday life. The Sommerhof lies in a quiet spot right next to woods and meadows and is still easy to reach.
The setting
- For children aged 6 to 8 with ADHD
- A small group of 4 to 5 children, so that each child can receive individual support
- Accompanied by a state-certified social pedagogue
- Ongoing, once a month for 1 hour – deliberately in the early afternoon, because the attention of children with ADHD is increasingly used up as the day goes on
- The sessions generally take place all year round and in any weather, in a calm and undisturbed atmosphere.
Costs
Each session costs €17. For families in special circumstances, the costs can be covered by “Ulms kleine Spatzen”.
