Animal-assisted intervention

Animal-assisted intervention means that an animal is deliberately involved in supporting a person. Doing things together builds connection and trust – in oneself and in others.

Mastering challenges together. Mindfulness, patience and communication while doing things together. This is how connection and trust in oneself and in others grow – an important goal of animal-assisted support.

Our animals in animal-assisted support

  • Ponies: Even when picking out hooves, children gain a great deal of confidence when such a large animal follows their instructions. Leading a pony reduces fear and strengthens mutual trust.
  • Sheep: With their gentle nature they can help people cope with fears and psychological challenges. The lanolin in their wool stimulates tactile perception and can help to reduce increased muscle tone.
  • Giant land snails: Their slow movements train mindfulness. The heavy snails can also help with sensory support.

What we offer

We offer animal-assisted support for individuals and groups, as well as riding education. Annika Sommer is a social pedagogue (B.A.) and a specialist in animal-assisted education. Families on a low income can receive financial support.

For children with ADHD there is the group “Fidgeting allowed, dreaming welcome”, and for children, adolescents and adults with trauma-related disorders the horse-assisted trauma-informed intervention.

How it works

This is how animal-assisted support works with us:

  1. Conversation: You tell us what your child needs and what you would like. Together we consider whether individual support or a group is the better fit.
  2. Getting to know each other: Your child gets to know the farm and the animals at their own pace.
  3. Support sessions: In regular sessions we work with the animals on the goals we have agreed. We take your child’s temperament and how they are feeling on the day into account, so that no one is overwhelmed.
  4. Keeping in touch: We stay in contact with you about your child’s development.

We will discuss with you personally how often the sessions take place and what they cost.
